Small but Mighty at Retreat Event with Dr. David Wright
TNL had a wonderful day-and-a-half rehearsal retreat in Sutton Ontario on Ag 26 & 27. We were thrilled to once again be coached by Dr. David Wright who, as always, gave us exactly what we needed now and helped us raise the level on our performance. While we were missing some of our members, David called us “small but mighty”, hearkening back to the early formative years of TNL.

    TNL's Quartet Celebration!
The Northern Lights are thrilled to host a "Quartet Celebration" on June 18th, featuring TNL and number of great Ontario quartets with members from our Chapter.

With no Ontario District "Pep Rally" this summer, we are excited to be able to showcase two of Ontario's representatives to the Barbershop Harmony Society's International Contest in Charlotte this summer.

Ripple Effect are one of the hottest mixed quartets around, and will be making their first appearance at the BHS International now that contests are open to all. The Aristocrats are no strangers to the International scene, and will again be taking their unique brand of comedy onto the stage this summer.

If you aren't going to Charlotte (and even if you are!), please consider supporting these wonderful quartets as they prepare to take the 'big stage' in July. To round out the show, we also have a number of other fabulous Ontario quartets performing for you; you're sure to love them all!

For TNL, it will be our first show under the direction of our new director, Andrew Carolan. After dealing with the Omicron wave, it will be wonderful to finally be able to give him a 'proper' introduction to the Ontario District as our director!

Tickets are $25, and under-twelves are free. We hope to see you there for a fabulous evening of celebration!

The show is over, but the holiday season has just begun!

Thanks so much to everyone that came to the shows yesterday. We hope you enjoyed it; we certainly had a blast!

We couldn't have done it without a cast of people that made the show possible: our show team; our musical leadership; our front of house crew; our backstage crew; and of course, our fantastic guest star John McDermott. We'd also like to offer our sincere thanks to our sponsor for the show, Aligned Capital Partners, and their President & Managing Director, Christopher Enright.

The last couple of months being able to rehearse has been so fabulous, but it was such a thrill to be singing for an audience - really the cherry on top! We hope to be able to do it again sometime soon!

In the meantime, we've now finished for the holidays; we'll be back at it on January 10th, 2022. And stay tuned, we've got some exciting news coming up!

TNL Musical Director Search restart – apply now!

Now that we are able to have in-person rehearsals again, TNL is restarting our search for our new Musical Director.

It seems so long ago that our friend Jordan had to step away! We initiated a director search over 18 months ago, and had a number of excellent candidates before the pandemic shut us all down. We really appreciate Steve Armstrong stepping into the breach to guide us through the pandemic – thanks again Steve!

Now, given the passage of time we are re-opening our search and allowing newly interested or available people to apply to lead TNL towards an exciting musical future. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please contact Charles Mathis (president@northernlighschorus.com) directly. And soon: we want to have our new Director in place by year-end so we need new applications no later than October 3rd.

    Thank you,

    Charles Mathis
    TNL President

  • We're Back!

  •  Date Posted: Mon, 13 Sep 2021

    Well.... we're back!

It's been 553 days (or 18 months & 5 days) since our last rehearsal, but tonight we're going to meet up for the first time since the pandemic hit.

We are totally excited to get back to singing, and although there's sure to be a lot of rust to brush off, we can't wait to ring a few chords together.

Of course, with the pandemic far from over we'll be taking every precaution to protect our membership, including masking and a requirement to be fully vaccinated in order to participate. We have also made provisions for our members that are unable to attend to participate in person to attend the rehearsal virtually,

Now the sad part; rehearsals aren't currently open to the public, but if you're thinking of becoming a member of the chorus, please reach out to us and we'll chat about what a plan will look like.

In the meantime, we'll continue to take things cautiously, but we're totally excited to meet up tonight!

The Toronto Northern Lights (TNL) hereby announce that their Music Director, Jordan Travis, has decided to step down. TNL would like to thank Jordan for all of his significant contributions to TNL over the past years, not least of all by being the #1 Tomato in our 2013 Gold medal winning performance of the wonderful “Veggie Set”. We wish you all the best Jordan!

TNL is now beginning a Music Director search process, which will include applications, interviews and auditions. If you are interested in leading this exciting A-level Barbershop chorus to next stage of its success, please contact Charles Mathis for more information or for an application package. • What a great show!
  •
  •  Date Posted: Sun, 29 Sep 2019

On Sept 27 2019 the Toronto Northern Lights had our first ever show at the Fairview Theatre here in Toronto. We had a grand time with a full house cheering on the chorus and our wonderful guest quartets. The quartets included She’s With Him, The Aristocrats, Ripple Effect (2018 World Mixed Quartet Bronze Medallist) and DoubleDouble. Amoung other material, DoubleDouble performed the hilarious Canadian-themed parody set which won them the 2019 International Seniors Quartet Championship this past January.

The show finished with Jordan Travis leading TNL in performing our latest competition set which won us 5th place at the BHS International Chorus championships in Salt Lake City this July. It was comprised of With You (from the musical Ghost) and I Can See Clearly Now, both arranged by our very own Steven Armstrong. This powerful emotional journey was followed by our exciting new showpiece Welcome To The Rock (also arranged by Steve) from the hit musical Come From Away. You can see some pictures on our Facebook page.

Now we’re in preparation for our Christmas shows which will be awesome, including some new material and some old favourites. Check out our Events page for more information!

Toronto Northern Lights are very excited about the Barbershop Harmony Society's recent announcement that BHS membership is open to everyone, rather than just men.  What does that mean for TNL?  Well, we have no idea yet! We are still waiting on more information from the society, and then once we have that information we'll decide what to do next - but that could take quite some time to sort out.  In the meantime, feel free to email public.relations@northernlightschorus.com with any questions you might have.  Also, if you're looking to sing some barbershop right away that is not for just men, then please check out any of the following fantastic organizations for active chapters in your area:

    Sweet Adelines International (for Women)
    Harmony Incorporated (also for Women)
Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association (for Everyone)

  • Back from summer break — and ready to start another season — in two week’s time!
  •
  •  Date Posted: Mon, 28 Aug 2017

After a terrific performance in the chorus contest at the International Convention in Las Vegas, we took the summer off. But in two week’s time, we get right back into it. On Monday, September 11, at 7pm, we’re going to get back to work, rehearsing material that will include songs that we’ll be performing at our Christmas show.

Details about our rehearsals are here, and we’re always glad to have visitors. There are usually folks in the building by about 630pm, if you’d like to come early, and afterwards (as at any chapter) there may be some additional singing going on, and possibly lovely refreshments around the corner at our local watering hole. And all are welcome!

The Christmas show? Glad you asked! It’s on Saturday, December 9, at the Metropolitan United Church, 55 Queen Street East in Toronto. Save The Date!

The Barbershop Harmony Society has just published videos of the chorus contest performances from last month in Las Vegas, Nevada, so sit back and take a listen to our uptune Smile Medley II and our ballad Who’ll Dry Your Tears. (Videos will open in a new window.) It was a real treat to honour the Scarborough Duke’s 40th anniversary of their first gold medal with three TNL members who were there, Barry Towner, Bob Gibson, and Bruce Marchant.

Enjoy! And we hope to see you at one of our performances sometime soon.

What a convention! That was a fun week. The chorus had a blast doing the Smile Medley/Who’ll Dry Your Tears set in Las Vegas, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Scarborough Dukes first gold medal. The Ontario District had already bought a spot on the big screens to congratulate the Dukes, as well as the competing quartets Test Drive, Yonge Guns and ‘Shoptimus Prime, so the audience knew the background on our set before we hit the stage on Friday.

And what a reception! There were roars from the crowd when the first green bowlers came out, then more cheering when the rest of the green bowlers landed, and even more noise when the green vests were finally revealed. We finished our first song to a standing ovation, with Barry Towner, Bob Gibson and Bruce Marchant in (more or less) the outfits that they wore forty years earlier. Our ballad went beautifully, and we walked off stage tired but happy with our performance.

It was a very strong chorus contest, and after scoring at almost the same level as we did in Toronto to win four years ago, we earned a fourth place medal. What a stellar chorus contest that was. And after that, we had a wonderful, emotional medal ceremony back in one of our chorus rehearsal rooms to finish off the day.

Finally, big congratulations to Test Drive (with brand new tenor Mike McKim), ‘Shoptimus Prime (with their awesome Back To The Future set), and Yonge Guns (for making it to the second round — and for some memorable .. dance moves) on their amazing performances.

Not everything that happens in Vegas .. stays in Vegas.

  • We’re off to Las Vegas!

If you’d like to listen to our performance on the webcast, please visit the BHS page here (this will open a new window) for more information.

Our first rehearsal in Las Vegas will be Tuesday night, and here’s the schedule — we love to have visitors!

That was a fun! We’d like to thank all of the kind folks who came out to our shows last weekend at the beautiful Lyric Theatre in the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

We had a wonderful time hosting The Buzz, 2005 Sweet Adeline quartet champions, as well as quartets Liner NotesSupertonicThe Aristocrats, and Mixed quartet champion Ripple Effect. Also thanks to Baton Rouge right near the TCA for staying open late for us to have a little Afterglow with food, drink and a little late-night singing.

Hope to see you all again at our Christmas show!
