  • Back from summer break — and ready start another season — in two week’s time!

  •  Mon, 28 Aug 2017

After a terrific performance in the chorus contest at the International Convention in Las Vegas, we took the summer off. But in two week’s time, we get right back into it. On Monday, September 11, at 7pm, we’re going to get back to work, rehearsing material that will include songs that we’ll be performing at our Christmas show.

Details about our rehearsals are here, and we’re always glad to have visitors. There are usually folks in the building by about 630pm, if you’d like to come early, and afterwards (as at any chapter) there may be some additional singing going on, and possibly lovely refreshments around the corner at our local watering hole. And all are welcome!

The Christmas show? Glad you asked! It’s on Saturday, December 9, at the Metropolitan United Church, 55 Queen Street East in Toronto. Save The Date!

The Barbershop Harmony Society has just published videos of the chorus contest performances from last month in Las Vegas, Nevada, so sit back and take a listen to our uptune Smile Medley II and our ballad Who’ll Dry Your Tears. (Videos will open in a new window.) It was a real treat to honour the Scarborough Duke’s 40th anniversary of their first gold medal with three TNL members who were there, Barry Towner, Bob Gibson, and Bruce Marchant.

Enjoy! And we hope to see you at one of our performances sometime soon.

What a convention! That was a fun week. The chorus had a blast doing the Smile Medley/Who’ll Dry Your Tears set in Las Vegas, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Scarborough Dukes first gold medal. The Ontario District had already bought a spot on the big screens to congratulate the Dukes, as well as the competing quartets Test Drive, Yonge Guns and ‘Shoptimus Prime, so the audience knew the background on our set before we hit the stage on Friday.

And what a reception! There were roars from the crowd when the first green bowlers came out, then more cheering when the rest of the green bowlers landed, and even more noise when the green vests were finally revealed. We finished our first song to a standing ovation, with Barry Towner, Bob Gibson and Bruce Marchant in (more or less) the outfits that they wore forty years earlier. Our ballad went beautifully, and we walked off stage tired but happy with our performance.

It was a very strong chorus contest, and after scoring at almost the same level as we did in Toronto to win four years ago, we earned a fourth place medal. What a stellar chorus contest that was. And after that, we had a wonderful, emotional medal ceremony back in one of our chorus rehearsal rooms to finish off the day.

Finally, big congratulations to Test Drive (with brand new tenor Mike McKim), ‘Shoptimus Prime (with their awesome Back To The Future set), and Yonge Guns (for making it to the second round — and for some memorable .. dance moves) on their amazing performances.

Not everything that happens in Vegas .. stays in Vegas.

That was a fun! We’d like to thank all of the kind folks who came out to our shows last weekend at the beautiful Lyric Theatre in the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

We had a wonderful time hosting The Buzz, 2005 Sweet Adeline quartet champions, as well as quartets Liner NotesSupertonicThe Aristocrats, and Mixed quartet champion Ripple Effect. Also thanks to Baton Rouge right near the TCA for staying open late for us to have a little Afterglow with food, drink and a little late-night singing.

Hope to see you all again at our Christmas show!
