This talented group of singers has represented the
Ontario District at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Championship each year
since their formation in 1998, bringing home five consecutive Silver medals
in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. With 34 men on stage in Kansas City in 2000,
they were proud to be recognized as the smallest chorus to ever receive a
medal at the International competition, and even more proud to be considered
instrumental in shifting the perceptions that a smaller chorus can compete
at the highest levels within the singing society.
TNL's expansive repertoire ranges from Barbershop to Broadway, Vocal
Jazz to Doo-Wop, and from Gershwin to the Beatles. As a testament to
this chorus' versatility, the Toronto Northern Lights was selected as
the winner in the Cultural Traditions category of the CBC / Radio-Canada
National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs in 2000.
Although Toronto is their home base, the chorus draws members from a
large area, with men willing to travel 200 miles (in all seasons!) for
rehearsals, just to be part of the excitement.
The Toronto Northern Lights is a dynamic group of men working towards a
common goal of musical excellence to thrill and charm their audiences. The
chorus attracts members from the complete range of ages, backgrounds and
employment; from twenty-year-old university students, to business
professionals, to men in retirement.
They have created 3 recordings for the public to enjoy over and over again,
including their most recent compilation the Sky's the Limit. |
